About the Speakers
Ibeyi (pronounced ee-bey-ee) means “twins” in the language of the Yoruba culture of Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz. Their albums, their videos, and Lisa’s pictures of Naomi tell the story of two sisters: their relationship, origins, shared history, and musical chemistry. The twins’ roots are reflected in the polyglot nature of their lyrics—in English, Spanish, French, and Yoruban (they were born in Paris to a French-Venezuelan mother and Cuban father)—and music, which combines ritual chants with synths and samplers, the traditional with the modern. This uniquely cosmopolitan sound is the perfect vehicle for their intimately personal stories.
Maya Dagnino is a self-taught photographer whose subject matter is the body—bodies of all materials; flesh, stone, bronze, cloth. Dagnino also practices music, in particular percussion and Yoruba singing. She has lived in Venezuela, India, New York, and Cuba. She currently resides in Paris and works with Ibeyi.
